018 | Covid travel…should you do it?
Traveling during the time of Covid, should you do it?
Before I go into the details of how to tackle Covid travel, I would be remiss if I did not point out this is an uncertain time in the world. We have experienced a catastrophic challenge as a planet. A pandemic effecting peoples’ health, livelihood, and how we connect. Everyone is undergoing a unique experience to them and them alone. What is right for you, may not be right for your family and vice versa. The same can be said for your friends, coworkers, neighbor, and even your significant other. Respect that. You may also be the more conservative one and not okay with the risks your family and friend circles are taking. Give yourself grace.
Life does not come with a play book. And Covid is no different. People make decisions for all different reasons and that is okay.
For me, I have made the decision to travel during the pandemic for multiple reasons. We started traveling small and it grew throughout the lockdown from day trips to renting a condo down at the coast. In June, we took our annual trip to meet-up with Mr. Big’s family in the Outerbanks via a longer road trip. Then, we took the plunge and jumped in to flying.
I like many of you live far away from my family…it is not a 2 to 5-hour drive. It is a 2-hour plane ride or a 15+ hour car ride. I usually only get to see my family 2-3 times a year. One of those times is the 4th of July. My folks live at the Jersey Shore and we decided to visit them. My parents missed us, the hotels at the shore were limited capacity, plane capacity in the US was at maybe 10%, we quarantined prior, I took tests before and after, not to mention, it was summertime…we could mostly stay outside while we spent time with family. In addition, mass vaccine expectations were being estimated for mid-2021/2022 at the earliest. We also were not sure how the holidays would play out. All of this made the decision an easy one for my family and for us to see them.
During the pandemic, I have traveled multiple other times with my husband and/or solo. Each time, we/I weighed the risks versus the rewards. Traveling to alleviate mental strain/stress, to see family, to escape work, for doctor appointments, and to give myself grace against a long fight with infertility.
The only person who knows when its right for you to travel again is you. Always keep others in mind but make the decision for yourself.
